"Apart from 15,500 motorists, 1,112 government vehicles, 64 policemen and 16 police vehicles have been fined by traffic police during the drive," said Commissioner of Police Y S Dadwal.
"We do not have any intention to show high statistics of people being issued challan for violation of traffic rules. We want people should cooperate and abide the rules," he said, adding that following traffic rules is in the interest of the road users.
Ensuring more vigil on roads and that violators do not escape easily, the Commissioner said 210 mobile motorcycle patrol units and 50 more GPS enabled Police Control Room (PCR) vans will become operational from February 16 on the Raising Day of Delhi Police.
At present, there is a 210-strong fleet of motorcycle patrol unit with the traffic police. To manage movement of heavy vehicles passing through the national capital and checking, two companies of Armed Police have been provided to the traffic police, he said.
Delhi Police had challaned 26 lakh people last year against 21.97 lakh violators in 2007. There was an increase of 85 per cent in action against red light jumping, 80 per cent in improper parking and 102 per cent in drunken driving.
Dadwal also said the process of addressing the complaints of people coming to police helpline has been modernised. Now, the messages are taken electronically and they are sent to the PCR van through SMSes.
